Tips for Postpartum Care

You may be very familiar with the idea of a birth plan. But planning for your postpartum time is just as important. Getting organized before your baby is born can reduce stress and avoid exhaustion. More importantly, you will have time to focus on what is most important- your new baby!

Here are some suggestions that can help you prepare for the postpartum period:

Make sure you know where to get breastfeeding help before you need it. Contact a lactation consultant that will come to your home to help during those first few days. Visit my Breastfeeding Resources post to become familiar with all of the great options in town.

Create baby care stations in a few areas around your house where you will be spending the most time. Get a basket to hold diapers, wipes, burp cloths, blankets, and a few changes of clothes.

If you are planning on breastfeeding, put together a nursing basket for your essentials. In those first few weeks you will be spending a lot of time sitting down nursing your baby. Include a water bottle, nursing pads, coconut oil or lanolin for sore nipples, books, knitting or other crafting materials, and anything else you will find handy during those nursing sessions.

Make a list of chores for visitors. Everyone who comes over to visit will ask if you need any help, so make it easy for them and have a list of tasks posted on the fridge that they can choose from.

Cook and freeze meals, or have friends and family do it. Also, stock up on disposable plates and utensils to use during those first few days and avoid the stress of dishes piling up. Alternatively, sign up for a Meal Train and have your visitors bring dinner each night for a week or two.

Accept that you will not- and should not- be able to do everything you did before your baby was born. It is okay if all the laundry isn’t done! Accept help from others, rest, and enjoy your new baby.

Dr. Elizabeth Grady
Naturopathic medicine (also known as naturopathy or natural medicine) is a complementary and alternative medicine which emphasizes the body’s innate ability to heal and maintain itself. Naturopathic philosophy favors a holistic approach, and finding the least invasive measures necessary for symptom improvement or resolution, thus encouraging minimal use of surgery and unnecessary drugs.

Myofascial Release is different from other types of bodywork as its intention is not to cover up or hide the symptoms but rather to exacerbate or “listen” to the communication that is coming through the system. The intention of a MFR therapist is to connect with the origin of the restriction, reveal the body’s innate healing ability, and allow it to reestablish homeostasis.

Babywearing Resources

What is Babywearing?

"Babywearing" simply means holding or carrying a baby or young child using a cloth baby carrier. Holding babies is natural and universal; baby carriers make it easier and more comfortable, allowing parents and caregivers to hold or carry their children while attending to the daily tasks of living. Babywearing helps a new dad put a fussy newborn to sleep. It allows a new mom use both hands to make a sandwich. It lets an experienced parent or caregiver carry a baby on her back and wash the dishes, do the laundry, take a hike, or weed the garden, all while keeping the baby safe and content.

TheBabyWearer.com
TheBabyWearer.com was founded in 2003 by Australians Jennifer Norton and Denby Angus. Their first son was carried in-arms, without benefit of a sling, and Jeni ended up with severe tenosynovitis in both elbows. It wasn't until she read The Baby Book (by Dr William and Martha Sears) that she realised there was a simple solution! Life with their second worn baby seemed much less daunting, as she was happy, her older brother got lots of attention, and mum and dad could get other things done too. Jeni's "parenting anxiety" was reduced by about 90%!

Breastfeeding and the law

In Arizona, a mother is entitled to breastfeed her child in public, and is not subject to indecent exposure laws, per the following Arizona Revised Statutes:

A.R.S. 41-1443
A mother is entitled to breastfeed in any area of a public place or a place of public accommodation where the mother is otherwise lawfully present.
A.R.S. 13-1402
Indecent exposure does not include an act of breastfeeding by a mother.

That means that no one can tell you to cover up or go somewhere else to nurse your baby! Print out one of these handy cards to whip out just in case some one does question you while you are nursing in public.
